Preparing for gender affirming surgery

Depending on your specific needs and goals for gender affirmation, as well as the type of surgery you are seeking, we will tailor a care plan and surgical pathway that is unique to you. Some typical steps we will ask you to take:

  • Complete the Gender Affirming Surgery Patient Agreement Click here to open
  • Meet with an Integrated Behavioral Health (IBH) gender health provider*
  • Attend our Gender Affirming Surgery (GAS) education class
  • Meet with our case manager to discuss your goals and review the surgical pathway
  • Have baseline lab tests checked to make sure you are healthy enough for surgery
  • Work with your primary care provider (PCP) to address any chronic health conditions in preparation for surgery
  • Quit tobacco smoking and/or use of other nicotine products
  • Maintain a healthy weight to ensure a safe surgical outcome
  • Attend all healthcare appointments as directed
  • Consistently attend all your electrolysis genital hair removal visits to ensure your hair is cleared for surgery

  • Remain in the hospital after surgery, if needed
  • Follow up with all your pre- and post-surgery appointments to make sure you’re healing well
